Types of Liposuction

Traditional (Suction-Assisted Lipectomy)

This involves the use of the tumescent solution to remove fat, which improves both safety and pain control. The final results leave patients with a smooth contour. SAL is perfect for areas that require the removal of small amounts of fat such as the neck and chin.

Developed by MicroAire, PAL® is a technology that capitalizes on the added power from a special, vibrating cannula (or narrow tube). The reciprocating head enables doctors to more easily and quickly break down and suction large volumes of fatty tissue. This method can be very helpful in procedures such as the Brazilian Butt Lift.

This type uses an ultrasonic device that increases the efficiency of the procedure by breaking down and separating scar tissue. Depending on how much energy is utilized, this technique helps lyse and separate fat, which then makes it easier to suction out of the body. VASER liposuction is used to treat denser areas of fat and scar tissues. This can be very helpful for revisional liposuction and gynecomastia surgery.

“Depending on the desire of each patient, there are a variety of surgical techniques we can use at Memorial Plastic Surgery, to ensure our patients obtain the best possible result to achieve their goal.” – Dr. Patrick Hsu

How is Liposuction Done?

Liposuction surgery can last between 30 minutes and 6 hours, depending on the number of targeted areas and how much fat needs to be extracted. Target locations include the arms, abdomen, flanks, back, hips, thighs, and sometimes the chin and neck. Based upon your surgeon’s evaluation, as well as your personal preference, local or general anesthesia may be used for surgery.

Once sedated, our board-certified plastic surgeons will mark small incisions along with the treatment areas in your body. Your doctor and the team of medical personnel will then insert a cannula through the incision lines to remove the unwanted fat from your body. Drains may be placed to prevent complications such as seroma (fluid build-up). Upon completion of the surgery, incisions will be closed and post-op garments will be used to mold your new contour.
