Dr. Patrick Hsu, Memorial Plastic Surgery’s founder, was named as one of Super Doctors’ Rising Stars in the field of plastic surgery for 2015.
Every year, the publication releases a list of outstanding physicians nominated by their peers or recognized for their professional achievement in more than 40 medical specialties. The process begins when doctors are asked to nominate those they personally deem exceptional in their particular field, which can range from plastic surgery to sports medicine. Simultaneously, the listing’s research staff scours various medical databases and online sources to add potential nominees who have garnered distinction in even more specialized fields.
Following physicians’ nominations, Super Doctors evaluates doctors based on the following criteria: years of experience, hospital appointments, fellowships, professional activities, leadership positions, academic achievements or positions held, board certifications, publications/lectures/presentations, honors and awards, and other achievements.
Those who continue to impress after the first round of evaluation are then grouped into specialties. Based on a rigorous scoring system, the publication asks nominees with the highest score in each respective field to serve on a blue-ribbon panel. Their task, should they choose to accept it, is to review and evaluate the remaining nominees in their particular specialties.
Once the total number of points from the nominations, research, and blue panel review are gathered, only the highest-scoring physicians (or about 5% of registered physicians within a specific state) are included in the final selection of top doctors.
The nomination and evaluation for the Rising Stars list are just as stringent, minus the consideration of years of experience. Nominees, such as Dr. Hsu, must be active physicians who have been fully-licensed to practice in about 10 years or less. Unlike the generic top doctors’ list, the Rising Stars selection names only 2.5% of the registered physicians in each state.
